The thermal stitch is such a simple, useful stitch to know. It is a variation of the single crochet that works up into a thick, sturdy project. I use the stitch in my Sturdy Wristlet Strap, Lucky's Leash, and Hot Dish Hot Pad patterns. The picture tutorial below will teach you how to work up this stitch.
To make this stitch, it first helps to know how to do the single crochet stitch. A video tutorial on this stitch can be found here.
Let's begin!
Step 1: Make the desired amount of chains.
Step 2: Work a single crochet stitch in each of the back bumps. To find these back bumps flip the chain over. There is one back bump right next to the hook. Work the first single crochet into the second back bump, and in each back bump across.
Step 3: For the second row, chain 1, turn, and single crochet through only the back loop of the current row and the front loop from the row below. Since you've turned your work. The front loop is now directly underneath the back loop.
Step 4: For all of the middle rows of your project, chain 1, turn and single crochet through the back loop only and the unworked front loop of the row below.
Step 5: Once you get to the last row. Single crochet through both the front AND back loop of the current row as well as the unworked front loop below.
Use this stitch to make up coasters, hot pads, towel hangers, bag straps and so much more!
Happy creating,
Christen
