This Santa Bonnet pattern works up quickly and is a great last-minute gift or market item. They draw lots of attention to craft show booths! They would also be great for a holiday photo shoot. This blog post is written for the 2-5 year old size. Additional sizes (newborn through adult large) along with a picture tutorial, are available with the downloadable pdf, found here.

Hook: 8 mm / L-11 US, or size to match gauge
Yarn: Bernat Softee Chunky in Wine and White
Scissors
Darning Needle
AMOUNT OF YARD
Wine - 124g/4.4oz or 134 yds/122m
White - 72g/2.6oz or 78yds/71m
FINISHED SIZE
8"Height X 21.5" Depth
40.5 in/103 cm x 6.75 in/17 cm

4”/10 cm x4”/10 cm= 9 SC STs and 10 rows

Pattern is written in US terms.
The bonnet is worked in one piece. Do not finish off until the very end.
Ch 2 does not count as a stitch.

PATTERN:
2-5 Years
CH 38.
SS back to the beginning through the BBs.
Do not turn. CH 36. Place a ST marker in the 36th ST.
CH 38. SS back through BBs to the ST marker.
Row 1: CH 1. Do not turn. SC in each BB across until the end of the 36 STs are reached. (see figure 4 on pg. 6) SS to attach to the last tie ST.
Row 2: CH 1, turn. SC across the middle 36 STs. Do not SC in the SS. (36)
Row 3-5: CH 1, turn, SC in each ST across. (36)
Round 6: CH 1, turn, SC in each ST across. SS to the first SC to attach ends of the body of bonnet together. (36)
Round 7: Change colors. CH 2, *DC INC, DC in the next 8 STs*, REP from * to * 3 more times. SS to join. (40)
Round 8-9: CH 2, DC in each ST around. SS to join. (40)
Round 10: CH 2, *DC DEC, DC in next 8 STs*, REP from * to * 3 more times. SS to join. (36)
Round 11: CH 2, DC in each ST around. SS to join. (36)
Round 12: CH 2, *DC DEC, DC in next 7 STs*, REP from * to * 3 more times. SS to join. (32)

Finish off. Leaving a 6 inch tail. Weave through the loops of the remaining STs, and pull tight.
Weave in ends. Make a pom that is 5” in diameter. Sew onto end of the hat.
